Dragon Quest IV Chapters of the Chosen was initially called Dragon Warrior IV, when it was first released in North America. This role-playing video game is a version of Dragon Quest IV. It is the 4th installment in the Dragon Quest video game series and was published by Enix. It was first released on the Famicom in Japan on February 11, 1990.
Heartbeat made the remake for the PlayStation. The Ultimate Hits version was eventually released. ArtePiazza followed this with a remake for the Nintendo DS. It was released in Japan in November 2007, and globally in September 2008. In 2014, a version based upon the Nintendo DS remake for Android or iOS was released.
Dragon Quest IV differs in other series because it is broken up into five chapters. Each chapter centers on a different protagonist. The Hero’s future friends tell the stories of the first four chapters. The Hero’s perspective is the fifth, and the fifth brings together all the characters on their quest to save humanity. The PlayStation remake adds a sixth Chapter, which is kept in the DS remake.
Dragon Quest IV – Chapters Of The Chosen Complete Walkthrough
This is my complete walkthrough for Dragon Quest IV. You don’t have to follow me every step of the way. I guide you but leave the exploration of the towns and the dungeons up to you. While I’ll help you with any problems or puzzles, the majority of the journey is yours.
Dragon Quest IV – Chapter 1
Clear out all barrels and pots from the room when you start the game. After you are done, go north. Head across the bridge and smash the barrels outside to get an Antidote Heroin. After the frog has spoken to you, head into the basement that we just came out of. You can speak to the red-haired girl inside the basement. It’s the frog in its true form.
You’ll find the Hero’s home in the west end of the village. After speaking to Eliza the red-headed frog-girl you’ll want go inside the building to talk to the man next to it. This will move the story forward.
Here’s a quick overview of how this game works. For the first half, you will be switching between four characters. Each one has their own adventures that you will need to complete. When you’re done with them all, you’ll be able to return to the Hero and the whole party will be together.
While each character’s adventure will take only a few minutes, it is not difficult to complete. However, you’ll need to grind a lot when you first become the control of a character. A common recommendation is to save the Seeds of Strength/Wisdom, and then use them all on the Hero.
After you take control of Ragnar, the King will explain what happened. There is an AMBER alert for some kids. You need to be Batman and save them. Southeast from Ragnar’s Castle you will find a Medicinal Herb.
While I won’t be showing you every treasure in every town, I will show you the key ones. There are many barrels and pots you can smash to get items, as well as drawers and bookshelves. Don’t worry if you have difficulty seeing where you need to go. You can turn the Camera with the R + L buttons.
A building is located south of the church. The screen shot shows it in my screen. It’s necessary for story advancement. The chest contains a Seed Of Strength. It is located on the opposite side of the building.
Once you are done with town, it is time to get out there and grind! The next 20 to 60 minutes will be spent grinding outside of town. You can stop resting at the Inn if your health is not improving. If you have been poisoned, you can go to the Church for treatment.
Once you have enough gold, go to the armor shop and buy some headgear. Spend the remainder of the Medicinal Herbs at our item shop. When you’re confident enough that you can wander far away from town without being killed, you can rest at the Inn. Then continue northwest to find a cave. (See the screen shot below).
Burland requires a story
– Chat with Aigneas (Angus’ wife).
Burland Cavern’s layout is simple. There are two treasure boxes inside – one containing 40 Gold Coins and the other containing a Medicinal Herb. In the northern section are the steps to exit the dungeon. You’ll find Strathbaile, which is a small community located just a little east of Burland cave’s exit.
You will find some items hidden in pots barrels drawers bookshelves and drawers in this town. To move the story forward, you will need Angus to speak with. Angus is a basement prisoner. In the northeastern part of the town, you will find the stairs to the basement next to the Church.
You will need to go to the menu and click “Talk” to communicate with Angus. If you don’t, the door will interact with you and you’ll never be able talk to him.
Strathbaile Story Requirements
Angus is the basement prisoner.
– (After Speaking With Angus). Return to Burland, talk to Aigneas, and then bring her back for Angus.
After speaking to Angus, you’ll want to return home to Burland and talk with his wife Aigneaus. As a non-combatant, she will join your party; you can return to Angus at Strathbaile. Angus’ memories will be reconnected with his wife once they are reunited.
The forest is our next destination, located southeast of Strathbaile. Before you leave town, make sure you are completely healed and that you have enough Medicinal Herbs in your inventory to fight at least 20-30 times. You won’t find a map in the next dungeon, which can make it a little confusing.
You will simply want to explore the forest southeast Strathbaile and find a purple-slime water source. To continue, you will need to fall into the well.
When you are going in the right directions, a message will pop up saying “Over here”. You will find Healie the healslime by following this prompt. Healie does not have to be used, but he can help Ragnar heal himself.
Story requirements for The Hidden Playground
Grab Talaria in the Treasure Chest of the Dungeon
– Talk with Healie to have him join your party
One floor above Healie, you will find a treasure box with the Talaria inside. This is what we came here to this dungeon to get. This screen shows the location of this chest. In a different version, I believe it is also known as Winged Shoes.
You will need to take Healie and the Winged Shoes along with you when you leave the dungeon. Continue climbing up until you reach a pit where you can drop down. This screen shot is from my screen. This will lead you to a room that has tons of treasures.
Then, return to Strathbaile. You will need to heal and then purchase any new equipment. Head west to Strathbaile Tower. As you can see, stand around the water’s edge. Next, open your inventory and select the Talaria item from the previous dungeon. This will take your to the top of this tower.
When you reach the top of the tower, speak to the child standing beside the monster. He’ll then retreat inside. Navigating the tower is not difficult. Make sure to get the treasure chests as you go down. One of them has a Cautery Sword, which has far more attack power that any other weapon. When you find it, equip it immediately.
Continue down until you find the basement room with the kid, and the monster from when we first arrived. A really old man will be standing on a stone slab. The boss fight will be triggered by speaking with this old man, so get well before you speak!
I would recommend that you first take out the Winky and then focus entirely on the boss. You shouldn’t find it difficult to fight the boss, but if your only goal is to earn enough gold to buy gear, you should be at least level 9 to 10 before you attempt to challenge the boss.
After defeating the boss, climb up to the top and exit the tower. You will find yourself at ground level. You can use the Talaria object to send you up to the top. This will put you back on the side that Strathbaile has placed.
Return the kids to Strathbaile, then return to Burland. You can also use the Chimerawing to quickly jump to Burland. To receive Ragnar’s final reward, speak to the King at Burland.
Dragon Quest IV: Chapter 2 Walkthrough
Alena is the lead character in your next adventure. This chapter starts at Zamoksva Castle in Zalenagrad. Once Alena has been taken into your control, you’ll want to explore the castle looking for any items you might need on your adventure.
Kiryl is walking in the Church area of the castle on the ground level. You can also speak to him while you are searching the castle. This will make the construction worker upstairs for Alena to leave. We can then exit the castle.
Go up to Alena’s room and you will find a hole cut in the wall. It has some wooden planks. Once you have broken through the wall, you will be outside of the castle. Two people will join you as you embark on your adventure if you jump to ground level through the same hole in the castle.
Story Requirements to Zamoksva Castle
– Talk with Kiryl at the church
– Visit Alena’s Room, and you can break through the boarded-up wall
The World Map will take you to the castle. You can then go to Zalenagrad on your left, which should always be your first stop. In this small town you will find one Seed of Agility. It is located in a barrel right next to the Weapon Shop Owner. As we earn money, you will also find an armor shop. Headgear provides great armor value for the money and I recommend it to your team.
What you want to do is to grind outside Zalenagrad for a while until your whole team is level3+ and you have some new armor. We need to head next to Tabarov, located northeast of Zalenagrad. (See screen shot below).
Anastasia, who is in Tabarov just above Inn, will speak with you and give you the Seed of Agility. Anastasia will be your only contact. She is located in the large, eastern-facing building. He’ll help you reach the priest. You can fight this monster boss-style at the Church.
Tabarov requires stories
– Chat with Anastasia, western building
– Meet Anastasia’s father (eastern construction)
– Tell the priest that the monster is ready for you to take on the priest
It’s a good idea to be at least level 5. If you don’t feel like fighting the boss, save your progress and just keep trying until you win. Although the fight is not difficult, it’s possible to take down your weaker party members in just one round.
Focus almost all your attention on the Foo Dogs during this boss fight. Take them out as soon as you can. Borya or Kiryl can be defeated by all three foo dogs in one turn if they are attacked by the same enemy.
Master Kung can strike pretty hard, so keep everyone above half health with Kiryl and use melee attacks to take him down. It’s that simple! Once Master Kung is defeated, you’ll be back in Tabarov where the Item Shop is open. If you wish to shop here, head north through the Church and onwards to Vrenor. This is a small community to the northeast Tabarov. Along the way, the monsters take a big jump in difficulty so be aware.
The second floor of the Inn is where you will interrupt a kidnapping. You will need to follow the kidnappers around town before you can re-enter Vrenor. You will be able to return to Vrenor this time and stay at the Inn.
Talking to the boy in the middle of the town at the fountain will help you move the story forward. He will tell about a Ransom Letter his dog found. After talking with him, speak with the man at the northernmost portion of town, which is where the Cemetery is. The next stop will be the Vault Of Vrenor. He will tell you about a bracelet.
Story requirements for Vrenor
– You can go to the second level of the Inn to see the scene and then leave the town.
– Talk with the boy in Vrenor about the Ransom Letter
Talk with the man in northern Vrenor about the Sparkly Bracelet from Vault of Vrenor
Prior to going to the Vault of Vrenor you will need to do some grinding. I recommend grinding around Vrenor till your entire party is at least level 8. This can take a while, so you may want to stop grinding and go to Tabarov to buy some weapons and armor from the Item Shop.
Note The Hunter’s Bow, which can be bought in Tabarov’s Item Shop, is available for use on your entire party. It will double your damage output for every melee attack, so it is highly recommended that you get one for each character.
Once you’re ready to go into the Vault, it will be located south of Vrenor. You can also refer to my screen shot below.
The Vault of Vrenor dungeon is very straightforward with many Treasure Chests. You can only retrieve the Amulet of Transmutation from the vault. This item is located on the second floor, at the southern end of the dungeon. (See my screen shot above).
Once you have the Amulet of Transmutation retrieved, go outside of Vrenor until it is night. Three NPCs from Vrenor will appear at the northern edge of town after the sun sets. In exchange for the Thief’s Key, you will want to give them the Amulet of Transmutation.
Note There’s a Seed of Life at the garden in the south portion of town, where the Church is situated. The priest blocks access during the day, but not at night.
Once you receive the Thief’s Key, you will automatically spend the night in the Inn. This town will have the Weapon Shop. However, the Iron Lance for Kiryl is my favorite upgrade. This assumes you already have a Hunter’s Bow.
Whatever your choice, continue south past the Vault of Vrenor, until you reach Desert Bazaar. It is a small, desert-like town located in the middle of large desert. There is an Armor and Weapon shop here that will sell many upgrades for your party. It’s up to the player if they want them to be purchased now or when you return to this area.
There will be plenty of running, beginning with the Desert Bazaar Town, in order to move the story along. You’ll be stopped at the Desert Bazaar town’s western side by a guard. This guard will inform you that your father has been taken ill and you have to go back to him.
You can return to Zamoksva Castle quickly by purchasing a Chimera wing from your inventory. After you’ve reached the King, go to his room and talk with the purple-clad man who is wandering around (his advisor). He directs you to Starek who is located in the back corner of the castle, near the garden. Starek can be reached by going through the hole in Alena’s wall, and then into the blue door next to where you will fall to the ground. Starek is an old man who lives in this room.
Story requirements for Desert Town and Desert Tower:
– You can enter the large tent in Desert Town without being stopped by a guard.
– Talk to the advisor at Zamoksva Castle about your plans.
– In the back of the castle, speak with Starek
Josef Starling, a local merchant on the Church’s balcony, can be reached at
Starek will tell you to meet Josef Starling in the village, just west of Zamoksva Castle. Josef is located on the second-floor balcony of the Church. This screen shot was taken above. Talk to him and he will tell you that he received his voice back from a potion he purchased at the Desert Bazaar.
Chimera Wing, yes, that’s right. You can also run back to Desert Bazaar to speak with the lady in charge of the item shop. She will tell you to go southwest from the Desert Bazaar to reach the Desert Tower. You should be at least level 10 to enter this dungeon. It’s a good idea to grind some more before you start the dungeon.
The double yellow/brown doors will lead you to the Inn at the top of the Desert Tower. If you are having difficulty finding the location, use L + R to turn your camera around. This is the best way to go about this dungeon. Spend your time picking up treasure chests and leveling yourself up. You shouldn’t need to be guided as the dungeon is easy to understand. Borya’s Evac skill can be used to replenish Kiryl’s MP. Then, you can sleep in the Inn.
Two elf girls will be waiting for you at the top. You will be given some nectar by them before you can flee the area. Grab it, Evac it! You will need the nectar to flee. Take it back to your father. Borya’s Zoom spell is a Chimera Wing that can be used without being consumable. He will give you permission for you to leave the continent.
Go east from Desert Bazaar by zooming in. The little dome-shaped structure will allow for you to teleport across this water. You’ll find Endor Castle, which is shown in my screen capture below, to the south from where you land on the new land mass.
We are now at the end. In Endor, all you need to do is talk to the King to learn about his plan to have the Queen win the colosseum match. Then have the King participate in the colosseum match. It is highly recommended that you are at least level 14 to attempt this, as well as stocking up on Medicinal Herbs for Alena.
Colosseum matches can be very easy. Alena will be your opponent for each fight. Most of the time, you’ll just spam regular attacks. Between fights, you will be able to heal with any Medicinal Herbs you have – which is something you should do.
Return to Zamoksva, your hometown, to find the castle abandoned after you have won in the colosseum tournament. As we do every time, travel through the castle and out of Alena’s room. You can exit the world map and end Alena’s chapter.
